A simple way to understand pi. The number π is a mathematical constant, approximately equal to 3.14159. It is defined in Euclidean geometry[a] as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, and also has various equivalent definitions. Pi is hidden everywhere, including inside a sequential alphabet clock. WHAT?! If you make a circle of the 26-letter Latin alphabet from A to Z, and then erase every single letter with vertical symmetry (like cutting down the middle of W or T so the left and right sides are mirror images), you're left with 5 groups of numbers... 3, 1, 4, 1, 6, which is Pi's first 5 digits rounded. Number Pi is a mathematical constant which indicates the relation between the perimeter and the diameter of a circumference. It's about fitting the diameter as many times as possible into the perimeter of the circumference. We say that it's a constant because number Pi (π) is the same for every circumference in the world, in other words, this number is always equal to 3.14. I chose to focus on the development of its approximation as a hook to teach the broader history of mathematics, rather than make this video an exhaustive list of facts. The wiki is a great place to learn more about the rest of the number's history and applications in maths and physics: 🤍 A few nitpicky things: - I made mistakes distinguishing between 'digits of pi calculated' and 'decimal points of pi calculated' in some sections, so it is possible that this error is elsewhere without me knowing. - Archimedes didn't do his approximation with squares, he started with hexagons and then increased the order of the polygon. I chose to present the zeroth order version of his algorithm using squares for simplicity, but note that this is not what he did. - Something which got lost from the final version of this video is my argument that during the Age of Enlightenment pi shifted from being a physical (measured) constant to a purely logical (theoretical) one. This then embodies the philosophical shift in society at the time. This is hinted at but not fully explained, so I thought I'd put this here. - Lastly, I am truly sorry for the pronunciations which I doubtlessly completely murdered in this video.
