18-year-old Boyan Slat combines environmentalism, entrepreneurism and technology to tackle global issues of sustainability. After diving in Greece, and coming across more plastic bags than fish, he wondered; "why can't we clean this up?" While still being on secondary school, he then decided to dedicate half a year of research to understand plastic pollution and the problems associated with cleaning it up. This ultimately led to his passive clean-up concept, which he presented at TEDxDelft 2012. Working to prove the feasibility of his concept, Boyan Slat currently gives lead to a team of approximately 50 people, and temporarily quit his Aerospace Engineering study to completely focus his efforts on The Ocean Cleanup. The progress of The Ocean Cleanup can be followed through 🤍theoceancleanup.com, 🤍facebook.com/TheOceanCleanup, as well as 🤍twitter.com/TheOceanCleanup. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Bobette discusses the radical act of storytelling, by sharing both the destructive power of bearing the untold story, and the new storytelling tools now available to release long-buried stories, to generate healing and make movements that can transform our world. She calls us to cultivate storytelling, so that the living memory of tragic events cannot become buried or lost, and so that history cannot repeat itself. Bobette Buster is the Writer/Producer of the feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, to be released 2019, with Karen Johnson and director, Midge Costin. She is also a Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling, Northeastern University (Boston), and the author of DO STORY: How to Tell Your Story So The World Listens (Do Book Co.UK, 2013; Chronicle Books (US)), now in its 9th printing (translated into five languages), and DO LISTEN: Understand What’s Really Being Said, Find A New Way Forwards, Do Book Co (UK) 2018; Chronicle Books (US). Bobette’s lectures on “Sound + Storytelling” and “Deconstructing Master Filmmakers” has put on the Visiting Faculty of Pixar Studios, Disney Animation, Catholic University of Milan, La Fémis (Paris) as well as many film and business programs worldwide. In addition, Bobette leads workshops on “How to Tell Your Story So the World Listens” to corporations in-house, including Google (Dublin, London), the BBC, and Animation Ireland. Bobette discovered her passion for storytelling while gathering the oral history of her Kentucky family’s and their neighbors’ Revolutionary War Land Grant farms heritage, a collection now housed in the Kentucky Museum Archives. She holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University (Evanston) and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program. She worked as a creative story executive in Hollywood for Tony Scott, Ray Stark and Larry Gelbart, while also creating the first MFA course for Feature Film and Television Development at USC, where she was an Adj. If you spend only a day at the gas station, you can see just about everything. The “get every last drop in the tank” types, the nozzle tuggers, the nozzle ripper-offers! And possibly even a few near explosions! So today, we decided to spread the most common mistakes people make while fueling up! For example, do you remember that thing about static electricity igniting invisible fuel vapors? Well, get this: when you get out of the car, your clothes sliding against the seat fabric creates some static charge. And when you grab that metallic nozzle, a spark can happen. That tiny spark can light up those gas vapors! Other videos you might like: If You Find an Envelope in Your Car, Throw It Without Opening! 🤍 7 Tricks That Can Make Your Car Last Longer 🤍 16 Driving Hacks from Experienced Drivers 🤍 TIMESTAMPS: Putting gas in any container 0:24 Being distracted 0:55 Not looking at the pump screen 1:30 Topping off your tank 2:15 Using your card at the pump 2:38 Walking away while pumping 3:13 Not checking your tires 3:51 Not touching your car before pumping gas 4:20 Not washing your hands after a fill-up 5:00 Driving in circles 5:39 Not locking the car 6:10 Buying premium gas 6:40 Not knowing how to handle an emergency 7:20 SUMMARY: - You can only pump gas into approved portable containers. You also can't fill them up inside your car or its trunk because static electricity can ignite fuel vapors. Always put the container on the ground. - Don’t assume all pumps are accurate and in perfect working order. Equipment can go bad, and gas station workers might not notice it right away. - Topping off your fuel tank can affect your car’s performance and could possibly damage the engine because of the built-up pressure. - There’s this thing called card skimming – which is when an illegal reader is attached to a payment terminal. Anybody can walk up to the pump and put that thing on there! - If your tires are underinflated, you don’t get as good gas mileage. Then you end up spending more because you have to fill up more often. - To dispel any electric charge on you, just touch a metal part of your vehicle before you reach for the nozzle. - Keep some hand sanitizer with you at all times, and use it as soon as you’re done filling up. Don’t wait until you’ve reached your destination because you’ll already have spread those germs all over your car, phone, and your face! - Look at the dashboard and find the small arrow near the gas gauge. If it’s pointing left, the car’s tank is on the left. - Even if you’re quick about grabbing your snack or paying for your gas, skilled thieves will already have “slid” into your car, grabbed anything valuable, and fled the scene with time to spare! - Get premium only if your car requires high-octane gasoline. - Let's say you place the nozzle inside the tank and suddenly see it’s caught on fire. First, don't remove the nozzle – just back away. Shut off the fuel at the pump using the emergency shut-off switch. Despite humanity’s technological developments and will to progress, we’re still utterly dependent on nature. Human effort has its limitations and is always in conjunction with nature. We cannot grow a plant, for example, completely isolated from natural growth, even though we can influence and manipulate it. The reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, stated that the world governs itself. It doesn’t need our intervention. As Lao Tzu wrote: “When you arrive at non-action, nothing will be left undone.” End quote. This idea resembles the basic understanding of the paradoxical concept “wu-wei.” But when we look for a definition of wu-wei, we quickly discover that there isn’t one fixed meaning. Some translate wu-wei as “non-action,” or “doing nothing,” others as “actionless action,” and others as “effortless action.” We find out that Taoism offers several layers, if you will, regarding how wu-wei can enhance our relationship with the world. And how this ancient art of “letting things happen” doesn’t necessarily make us passive, ignorant bystanders but can actually improve how we act, leading to better outcomes. This video (Wu-wei | The Art of Letting Things Happen) serves as a humble attempt to make the depth of this philosophical idea clear and practical. Do you wonder why flight attendants always give us the same instructions before take-off and landing? Some of them sound strange and seem to have no logic. Like, why do we need to open window shades or sit in darkness for flights at night? Pilots have their own window to look through, and they can’t even see if it’s dark or not in the passenger cabin. What gives? Take-off and landing are the most dangerous moments of the whole flight. Airplanes seldom crash in the air; the pilots can easily control the aircraft at a high altitude, or even in a turbulence zone. Most crashes actually occur when the plane is rising above the airport, or is touching back down on the runway. So all the instructions we follow have a good explanation. And that’s for our own security. Let’s see how it works. Other videos you might like: Why Planes Don't Fly Over the Pacific Ocean 🤍 Pilots Reveal 16 Nuances That Make Your Flight Safe 🤍 11 Secrets Flight Attendants Will Never Tell You 🤍 TIMESTAMPS: The source of power on board 1:04 Emergency 1:38 Why pirates used to wear an eye patch 😜 4:02 Why does the seat back have to be straight? 4:44 Why you should keep window shades open 5:25 What about cell phones? 6:28 #planes #rulesofflying #brightside SUMMARY: - The source of power on board the plane is an electric generator, which works at full blast during these 2 crucial moments of the flight. - The lights are turned off so that nothing interferes with the generator’s work when it’s under the most stress. - The human eye is built in a special way. When the light around us rapidly changes from very bright to dark, it takes some time for us to get used to it. - The crew dims the light in the cabin on a nighttime flight so that the passengers’ eyes get used to the outside darkness. - Your eyes won’t need time to adjust to see the little floor lights that guide you to the exits. That’s why using your gadgets with a bright screen is also not allowed. - If everyone had gotten used to low light conditions before the accident happened, you'd see about 1,000 times better, compared to if you were suddenly plunged into the darkness. - Passengers should stay in their seats with seat belts fastened, the back of their seats in a vertical position, and tray tables locked. - In case of an emergency, this position is also safer for you and the passenger behind you, since the risk of trauma to the head and neck is much lower this way. - Pilots say that passengers are curious; they're perfect for an extra set of eyes to see if something goes wrong out there. Usually passengers report stuff right away. - Plastic shades can also cause different injuries: in the case of a crash landing, the plastic can break into sharp pieces, which can cut your face, hands or other body parts. - The root of this instruction is in the past, when the navigational system wasn’t protected well enough from interference. - Most researches show that switched on electronic devices don’t influence modern navigation. So, in 2014, this rule was officially called off. - Some airlines still stick to it, though, mainly out of habit. It’s just a question of time before it’s no longer used anywhere. !! Don't do the breathing exercises in a swimming pool, before going underwater, beneath the shower, or piloting any vehicle. Always practice sitting or lying down in a safe environment. Tinnitus symptoms may appear as a result of pushing too forcefully during the breathing exercise. If this happens, take a step back in your future practice, it’s important to increase gradually, not forcefully !! How can we be satisfied without cost? How can we be wealthy with only the bare minimum? Several philosophers of the past shed their light on questions like these. And, according to some, the cheaper your pleasures, the richer you'll be. This video explores different views on wealth, desire, and pleasure and how being ‘rich’ can be pretty cheap (minimalist philosophy). Most of the time, cats come across as utterly indifferent. They don’t seem to care about other cats and aren’t too attached to their owners. But does this mean that cats are immoral, heartless creatures? Are cats, from a philosophical viewpoint, devoid of ethics and virtue? According to philosopher John Gray, author of the book Feline Philosophy, Cats and the Meaning of Life, cats have ethics and are also capable of love and affection. The book explains feline philosophy using John Gray’s interesting insights supplemented with theories and views by other philosophers like Arthur Schopenhauer, Michel de Montaigne, and Plato. Based on my interpretations of Gray’s ideas, this video explores what we can learn from cats. Consider the school bus. It could be painted literally any color: pink, bright green, orange, or even zebra-print. So, why pick yellow? Is it because it’s a cheerful hue that makes kids happy to go to school? See the kid’s faces? The main reason for picking yellow paint for school buses is... safety! If you look at the color closely, you'll notice that instead of being pure yellow, it's a totally different shade! It's a curious mixture of lemon-yellow and orange. But what about the scientifically proved fact that red is the one with the maximum wavelength? It doesn't get scattered easily, and that's why you can clearly see it from afar! On top of that, most people associate this color with caution. So, why not paint school buses red? Other videos you might like: Why Airplanes Are White 🤍 School Lunches You've Probably Never Heard About 🤍 How to Choose a Safe Seat in 7 Types of Transport 🤍 TIMESTAMPS: Why are they not red? 1:19 But it wasn't always like this! 2:29 National School Bus Chrome 3:04 Why aren't school buses equipped with seat belts? 3:48 Chains under school buses 6:16 Why some of the buses have black hoods 7:19 #schoolbus #yellowbus #brightside SUMMARY: - Despite all the scientific stuff, it’s not red, but yellow, which is the color that instantly grabs your attention in daily life. - Depending on the season, it's often still dark outside at this time. That's why it makes sense to use yellow paint, which will make buses more noticeable on the road. - Scientists state that you're 1.24 times more likely to spot a yellow object with your peripheral vision than the same object painted red! - But it wasn't always like this! The "National School Bus Glossy Yellow" color didn’t appear until 1939; before that, school buses were painted all kinds of colors. - Seat belts simply won't make school buses safer! The thing is that traveling on a school bus is a 40 times safer than going somewhere by car. - The seats on a school bus are situated close to each other, and they have high padded backs. As a result, if an accident does happen, and a student gets propelled forward, they’ll only move a short distance. - Adding seat belts would increase the cost of each bus by $8,000 to $15,000! Plus, buses would have fewer seats because seat belts would take additional space. - If a school bus weighs more than 10,000 pounds, it's up to the states to decide whether the vehicles need to be equipped with seat belts or not. - The chains help school buses get traction on icy roads. If the driver realizes that they can't cope without some additional help, they can just press a button on the dashboard. - When the sun is too bright, the glossy, bright yellow paint covering the hood of the bus starts to give off too much glare. As a result, it makes it hard for the driver to see their surroundings, and distracts them from the situation on the road. - And while some states make school bus manufacturers equip vehicles with black hoods, others forbid it. In this case, they get covered with an anti-glare substance. Suppose we let our life satisfaction depend on things challenging to obtain. In that case, we set ourselves up for stress, discontent, and insecurity. We tend to worry a lot about not having what we want, losing what we have, and the future not playing out as we desire. A much better alternative would be a minimalist mindset of abundance. If we experience no shortage in getting our needs met, we’ll quickly achieve a state of contentment. And the quickest way to reach abundance is by downgrading our needs. The less you want, the more you have. And when we have plenty, we care less about gain and loss; we’re less stressed about missing out and less fearful of change. This video delves into the benefits of being satisfied with little, how this leads to a more carefree life, and how we can experience abundance instead of scarcity through a minimalist mindset. The less you want, the more you have (Minimalist Philosophy for Living in Abundance). Do you know that feeling after a long day when you think, if only I was a bird, I could fly away from all this hard work? But some animals work way harder than people do. And while we humans get a choice, of having to work hard or not, most animals have no option. There’s just no time to rest if you want to survive in the wild! So what are the hardest working animals? For example, whether the honey bees like it or not, nature has made them into real hard workers. Every single hive is like a big, busy corporation, where every single bee has a special role to play. Earthworms spend their entire lives making tunnels in the soil. As for ants that have a reputation for being the most hard-working creatures in the world, they are ... real experts at being lazy! But the most amazing thing about these slackers is that they’re actually doing the right thing! #brightside EPISODES: Honey bees 00:00 Emperor penguins 0:31 Earthworms 1:16 Termites 1:45 Cleaner wrasse 2:26 Bowerbirds 3:28 Lions 4:05 Beavers 4:45 Ants 5:36 Dogs 6:58 Elephants 8:10 Koalas 8:41 Music by Epidemic Sound 🤍 Subscribe to Bright Side : 🤍 Our Social Media: Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: 🤍 Stock materials (photos, footages and other): 🤍 🤍 🤍 For more videos and articles visit: 🤍
