We captured so much incredible footage on our last trip to Turkmenistan, I thought I'd make a little 4K DJI Drone montage video of the door to hell. The gates of hell. Darvaza Gas Crater. Derweze. Call it what you want. Turkmenistan is built on natural gas. I mean this literally and figuratively. In the vast arid Karakum desert lies the 4th largest natural gas deposit in the world. The Darvaza Crater was a mining disaster. So they think. No one really knows, as I don’t believe there were any survivors. In 1971 a soviet mining operation punctured the eggshell surface and fell into a pit. Years later, someone lit a match, and Bang! Welcome to the door to hell. This is the main attraction in Turkmenistan, and our plan was to roast marshmallows over it. Darvaza Gas Crater is also known as the Door to Hell. It's located in a village in Derweze, Turkmenistan. According to some Turkmen geologists, this site was identified by Soviet engineers in 1971. They thought to find Oil reserves below it. o access the Oil, Soviets started drilling inside but accidentally, they found a natural gas pocket and the ground beneath collapsed into a big crater. The crater was releasing Methane gas in large amount which could quickly spread to the nearby towns. So to prevent the spread of gas, they decided to set it on fire. Hoping the gas would burn off in a few weeks. It's been 49 years and the crater is still burning. Last Words of Albert Einstein? In the middle of the Karakum Desert, the small village of Darwaza is home to less than 350 people. It's also the home of one of the most magnificent and incredible lesser-known wonders of the world, the "Door to Hell." The creation of this particular spot wasn't natural at all but its amazing and inexplicable composition is. In 1971, Soviet geologists accidentally discovered a cave filled with natural gas when the ground beneath their oil rig collapsed, uncovering it. In order to protect the locals and prevent intoxication from poisonous gas, the geologists decided it best to light the gas on fire and burn it away. That large crater, 70 metres in diameter, has been burning ever since. The Darvaza Natural Gas Crater is a vast, fiery pit, measuring 200 feet wide and 65 feet deep. For the past 50 years, it’s been smoldering away in the middle of the Karakum desert, in the central Asian country of Turkmenistan. The crater was formed in the early 70s, when a natural gas pocket collapsed into a cavern. Nicknamed the ‘Gateway to Hell,’ it’s something of a tourist attraction. Yet, all that burning fossil fuel is not good for the environment.
