None of the footage is mine, Hello all! I hope you guys are doing well! I was asked to make a maritime video, and what better video to make than on the JMSDF! I hope you guys enjoy this plethora of footage (specifically from 1982 to 1999, as a tease to the song hehe) I found, and hope you guys make good use of it as well! Thank you all and God Bless! The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (Japanese: 海上自衛隊, Hepburn: Kaijō Jieitai), abbreviated JMSDF (海自, Kaiji), also simply known as the Japanese Navy, is the maritime warfare branch of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, tasked with the naval defense of Japan. The JMSDF was formed following the dissolution of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) after World War II. The JMSDF has a fleet of 154 ships, 346 aircraft and 50,800 personnel. In 1952, the Coastal Safety Force was formed within the Maritime Safety Agency, incorporating the minesweeping fleet and other military vessels, mainly destroyers, given by the United States. In 1954, the Coastal Safety Force was separated, and the JMSDF was formally created as the naval branch of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), following the passage of the 1954 Self-Defense Forces Law. Following the end of the Cold War, the role of the JMSDF has vastly changed. In 1991, after much international pressure, the JMSDF dispatched four minesweepers, a fleet oiler (JDS Tokiwa) and a minesweeping tender (JDS Hayase) to the Persian Gulf in the aftermath of the Gulf War, under the name of Operation Gulf Dawn, to clear mines sown by Saddam Hussein's defending forces. Starting with a mission to Cambodia in 1993 when JSDF personnel were supported by JDS Towada, it has been active in a number of UN-led peacekeeping operations throughout Asia. In 1993, it commissioned its first Aegis-equipped destroyer, Kongō. It has also been active in joint naval exercises with other countries, such as the United States. The JMSDF has dispatched a number of its destroyers on a rotating schedule to the Indian Ocean in an escort role for allied vessels as part of the UN-led Operation Enduring Freedom. A graceful yet compellingly powerful Japanese armada has embellished the country's Sagami Bay, showcasing the latest firepower of seabound warfare. The tri-annual fleet review conducted special military maneuvers with more than 8,000 troops spread over 36 vessels. Boasting an advanced Aegis radar system, new conventionally powered submarines and high-speed hovercrafts, the navy launched rockets and flares to enhance its overall display of power. Over three dozen planes flew the friendly skies of the turbulent waters off the Japanese coast. Russia Today Video
Japanese shipyard Mitsui E & S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd in Okayama launched on 19 November 2020 a new type of next generation frigate for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) known as 30FFM. = The vessel is named after the Kumano river in the Kii Peninsula of central Japan. The shipyard will now proceed to the fitting out stage of the frigate, ahead of its delivery set for 2021. "Kumano" is actually the second vessel of the series. The first-in-class ship is still under construction at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki. For the record, MHI won a contract from the Japanese MoD in August 2018 for the production of the first two frigates. Mitsui E&S received a subcontracting order from MHI for the construction of the second frigate. Kumano is the company's 2050th ship. Taking a close look at Japan's latest frigate, Naval News can tell that stealth was a key requirement of the design and was pushed to the limit with some very sleek and modern lines. 30FMM will act as a UUV and USV mothership but all the launch and recovery systems are hidden inside its main structure, behind large doors which are flush with the hull. Likewise, most sensors will be integrated on the mast to minimize the radar cross section. 30FFM will have a relatively limited weapons fit, which is similar to some of Europe's latest surface combatants such as: - The UK's Type 31 - Germany's F125 or Italy's PPA light = For new videos every week, subscribe here! 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 Follow us on LinkedIn: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Check out our daily naval defense news coverage at: 🤍 NAVAL NEWS is fully focused on naval topics. The JMSDF Training Squadron visited the main base of the French Navy (Marine Nationale) in Toulon, France. Naval News took the opportunity to interview the Commander of the training squadron, Rear Admiral Komuta. We also toured training vessel JS Kashima. = The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Training Flotilla departed Japan in April and is going around the world in 4 months. It is composed of training vessel JS Kashima and Escort Ship Shimakaze (Hatakaze class DDG). 130 newly commissioned officers are being trained aboard Kashima with 30 more aboard Shimakaze. JS Kashima was built by Hitachi Sozen in the 90ies. Some areas look like you are in a luxurious cruise ship while others are closer to a real warship. It is fitted with a 76mm main gun and torpedo launchers after all... The ship has a displacement of 4,050 tons. JS Shimakaze is not a "new ship" but is new for the training flotilla as it replaces older Hatsuyuki class DDs. The Admiral said Shimakaze is larger therefore is more suited for training. Shimakaze is fitted with two 5 inch main guns, Phalanx CIWS, Harpoon ASM, SM-1 SAM, ASROC and torpedoes. Displacement is 4,650 tons. = For new videos every week, subscribe here! 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 Follow us on LinkedIn: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Check out our daily naval defense news coverage at: 🤍 NAVAL NEWS is fully focused on naval topics. The Hyūga-class helicopter destroyer is a type of helicopter carrier built for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). Two - Hyūga and Ise - were built; upon completion the class were the largest ships built for the Japanese navy since the Second World War. Hyūga was described in a PBS documentary as the "first Japanese aircraft carrier built since WWII." The Hyūgas were followed by the larger Izumo class, the first being commissioned in March 2015. The Izumos will replace the Shirane-class helicopter destroyers; the Hyūgas were originally meant to replace the Shiranes. The specifications of the Hyūga class are comparable to light aircraft carriers, such as Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi and Spanish Príncipe de Asturias. Under the JMSDF's naming conventions, the ships are called Goei-kan (lit. escort ship) in Japanese and destroyer in English, as same as all the other combatant ships of JMSDF. #JSDF #JMSDF #Hyuga #JPSWAT

This is a video of a JMSDF Carrier group in 1/350 scale. The Japanese have now built four carriers. Two Hyuga class which displace about 20,000 tons and to Izumo class which displace about 30,000 tons each. Although they are replacing four much smaller destroyers which could carry 3-4 AW helicopters and ASW warfare, these vessels are much larger and have large carries-like flat decks...and there can be no doubt when looking at them that they are carriers. Though the Japanese have a direct ASW responsibility in the US - Japanese alliance, these carriers look perfectly capable of carrying F-35B 5th generation stealth strike fighters. The Hyuga class (shown here) could carry a wing of twelve. The larger Izumo class (which there is no 1/350 scale model for yet) could carry as many as 24. They would be very powerful escort carriers for Japan and the US-Japanese alliance. This group consists of the following: 1 Fujimi 1/350 scale Hyuga carrier 1 Atago class AEGIS destroyer, by Trumpeter in 1/350 scale 1 Arts Technique Akizuki class Destroyer in 1/350 scale 1 Trumpeter Takanami destroyer in 1/30 scale 1 Pit Road Soryu SSK in 1/350 scale conventional submarine This is a very strong anti-submarine warfare grouping that could carry a large number of ASW helicopters and use the Soryu sub to good effect. Also, should the JMSDF decide to go that way, they would also make an excellent escort carrier with F-35B 5th generation strike fighters. The Japanese air force is already buying a large number of F-35A aircraft. See all of my various 1/350 scale groupings on youtube and the individual model builds on Fine Scale Modeling online magazine, Sino Defence forum, and feel free to share them with others.
