Demonstrators scuffle with Lebanese soldiers after closing a main highway in protest over a hike in customs duties. The protesters, many of them car dealers, burnt tires and held posters that read, "They've wrecked our homes." Lebanese authorities in mid-May raised the "customs dollar" the rate used to calculate duties on imported goods from 60,000 LBP to 86,000 LBP. It was the fourth such increase to the rate since it jumped tenfold to 15,000 LBP in December to match Lebanon's new official exchange rate. #Lebanon #Protest #Currency #reels #voanews (AFP) » Subscribe to VOA News: 🤍 » Watch more VOA News video: 🤍 Voice of America (VOA) is the largest U.S. international broadcaster, providing news and information in more than 40 languages to an estimated weekly audience of 236.8 million people. Lebanon's economic and political crisis appears to have an end in sight. However, the issue of Syrian refugees presents another crisis within the current situation. Lately, these refugees have been encountering increased violence and discrimination as the Lebanese struggle to make ends meet. Over the past decade, approximately 2 million Syrians, most of whom are considered refugees according to Lebanese authorities, have crossed the border. In response to this influx, the government has implemented a plan that will lead to the expulsion of Syrian refugees. 🔔 Subscribe to France 24 now: 🤍 🔴 LIVE - Watch FRANCE 24 English 24/7 here: 🤍 🌍 Read the latest International News and Top Stories: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 Discover the news in pictures on Instagram: 🤍 Get the latest top stories on Telegram: 🤍

Various top shots of Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp and the area around, UPSOUND of gunfire STORYLINE: Clashes resumed in Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp, with heavy gunfire and shelling wounding several people and prompting residents of the camp and the surrounding area to flee on Friday. Several days of street battles had broken out in the camp, Ein el-Hilweh, between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement and Islamist groups after Fatah accused the Islamists of gunning down one of their military generals on July 30. Those street battles left at least 13 dead and dozens wounded, and forced hundreds to flee from their homes. An uneasy truce had been in place since Aug. 3, but clashes were widely expected to resume as the Islamist groups have not handed over the accused killers of the Fatah general, Mohammad “Abu Ashraf” al-Armoushi to the Lebanese judiciary as demanded by a committee of Palestinian factions earlier this month. A committee of Palestinian factions in Ein el-Hilweh announced on Tuesday that their joint security forces would launch raids in search of the accused killers. Fatah officials said that the Islamist groups had launched an attack Thursday night in an attempt to forestall plans by the joint security forces to clear militants out of schools they had been occupying in the camp on Friday. The state-run National News Agency reported six people were wounded, including an elderly man, and transported to hospitals overnight. There were no immediate reports of deaths. The public Lebanese University announced it would close its branches in the city of Sidon, which is adjacent to the camp, and postpone scheduled exams in light of the fighting. 'Lebanese Armenians Clash With Riot Police Outside Azerbaijan Embassy'. Hundreds of Lebanese Armenians scuffled with riot police on Thursday outside the Azerbaijan Embassy in northern Beirut during a protest against the Azerbaijani military offensive that recaptured Nagorno-Karabakh from the enclave's separatist Armenian authorities. Protesters waved flags of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, and burned posters of Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the demonstration in the Ein Aar suburb of the Lebanese capital. Lebanese riot police lobbed teargas canisters at the protesters after they hurled firecrackers toward the embassy building. The 24-hour Azerbaijan military blitz last week forced Armenian separatist authorities to agree to lay down weapons and sit down for talks on Nagorno-Karabakh’s “reintegration” into Azerbaijan. The separatist government said Thursday that it would dissolve itself and the unrecognized republic will cease to exist by year’s end after a three-decade bid for independence. More than 50% of Nagorno-Karabakh’s population of 120,000 have left the region for Armenia as of nightfall Wednesday. Though Azerbaijani authorities promised to respect the rights of ethnic Armenian, many fear reprisals. The former head of Nagorno-Karabakh’s separatist government was arrested as he tried to cross into Armenia alongside tens of thousands of others who have fled. During the enclave's independence bid, Lebanese Armenians have sent money and aid, and have actively campaigned in the media in support of Nagorno-Karabakh, which they refer to as Artsakh. Lebanon is embroiled in an unprecedented economic crisis, which has lately restricted the financial support of the Lebanese Armenians for Nagorno-Karabakh because of banks imposing tight withdrawal limits. Lebanon, a tiny Mediterranean country of about 6 million people, is home to some 150,000 Armenians. It's one of the largest Armenian communities in the world outside Armenia, most of them descendants of survivors of the 1915 mass killings during the last days of the Ottoman Empire. At the time, an estimated 1.5 million people were killed in the events that are widely viewed by scholars at the first genocide of the 20th century. Turkey denies the deaths constituted genocide, saying the toll has been inflated and that those killed were victims of civil war and unrest. #azerbaijan #armenians #news Subscribe here: 🤍 TikTok: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: 🤍
