The miaodao saber, also known as "long saber" in ancient times, gets its name from the slender shape of a seedling. It is a precious cultural legacy of China. Miaodao can be used both as a blade and a spear, with one or both hands. In actual combat, the weapon is mainly aimed at opponent's upper body, like the head, shoulders, arms or chest. It has been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of China. Originating in the Han Dynasty (202BC-220AD) and having reached its peak in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), miaodao has a history of more than a thousand years. The weapon's shape determines the fighting technique. The back of the thick blade is used to fend off the enemy's weapon. 2000 years old ancient Chinese long saber technique which combines skills of sword, staff and spear. The name Miao Dao means "wheat sprout saber", presumably referring to a likeness between the weapon and a newly sprouted wheat. Miao Dao is a decedent version of a variety of ancient Chinese long sabers, such as the Han Long Saber and Cutting Horse Long Saber. Miao Dao Skills have been developed by martial artists of different dynasties to pass down form one, two and four to our time. Along with the One hand saber, Miao Dao was also used by some Chinese troops during the WWII to fight with Japanese army.

In this video, I review and test the Miao Dao from LK Chen Swords. The nearly 5 foot long sword weighs only 3.25 lbs. As can be seen in the video, this very interesting and somewhat unique long saber cuts and thrusts very well, either in one hand or two hands.
Steel Miaodao are wielded to present Sword Combat employing techniques from the Four Roads Miaodao form. Teacher Rodell, in blue on the left, employs a běng tiāo (繃挑) deflection in a kǎn cut (砍), follows with a circular jiǎo (絞) deflecting into a pi cut, then slips to his left with a jià hù (架護), countering with a jī cut (擊) to the next neck, then circles into a second jī (擊) cut as his duifang responds to his first. Chuo Jiao 戳脚 - Miao Dao 苗刀 - Master Yao Zengbin A couple of systems adopted the Miao Dao at some point in time. The most extensive Miao Dao is propably taught nowadays inside some Pigua and Tong Bei Lineages that use the two forms that have been created. There is also a 4 Route Miao Dao which is taught inside Taiwan Baji Lineages.

This is a Miaodao from Ladies-Gentleman. It was an e-bay seller for a time that I am unable to find now. Sword friend Matt bought this and sent it my way for evaluation. There were a few things I noticed after the review. 1. The heat treatment is stronger at the tip of the blade. The bottom 2/3 of the blade are softer and easier to bend. The top 1/3 is a little more springy. 2. the top surface of the steel has some spots that look like blisters or bubbles. I cannot tell if they are from heat treatment or the etch. I finally got a chance to foo around with the new Chan gDao from LK Chen. this is the big daddy of Chinese swords! Longer than any miao dao I have. Tried out some Dan Dao Fa Xuan with a proper weapon. Full review to come.

🤍 🤍 During the Ming Dynasty, the Chinese fought with the Japanese pirates. This ancient manual was written and drawn during that period by 程宗猷 (Cheng Zong You), who learnt from 刘雲峰 (Liu Yun Feng). Liu, learnt Japanese swordsmanship, Kenjutsu, directly from the Japanese during that time.
