Dan Worrall looks into the new "Smart Operations" feature found in several Tokyo Dawn Labs audio plugins, and shares a few tricks and thoughts. Smart Operations analyse the audio input’s spectral properties to allow running advanced Operations in dependence of this information. The system internally searches for the optimal plugin parameter settings for the case at hand, and sets them accordingly. The operations cover a wide array of applications: Spectral matching against various references, detection and removal of static resonances, filter configuration tasks and more. Operations can be fine-tuned toward a specific frequency range and total extent of the effect (both negative to positive). The aim here is to alter (usually in a noticeable way) the timbre of a sound in the mix. In the production this was done to make that particular instrument sound the way we wanted. Now, we are thinking a little bit deeper and focusing on how all the sounds are blending together. As you’ll see in this example we radically change the sound of the piano. On it’s own it now doesn’t sound that great. But now in relation to synth, the piano serves a backing function as compared to a masking one. You may prefer the way this sounds or you may not. For higher quality (free) videos please visit Sormena.org. Blend it EQ is the process most people associate with mixing. However, I find that blend it EQ is meaningless or counter productive if the Fix It and Enhance It tasks aren’t taken care of first. The settings you dial in here are usually quite subtle and require you to listen in context to the mix as a whole. It takes time to develop your ear this way so don’t be discouraged if you’re not finding a reason to apply a lot of blend EQ. In some mixes the instrumentation choices made were so good that blend it EQ is not necessary. That being said for the sake of cohesion (tying it all together) a “blend it EQ” with the same settings (especially if small amounts of saturation are involved) can make a profound impact on the mix. This might be one of things missing that you can't put a finger on when comparing your mix to a professional reference. You have to remember that some of “that sound” is the hardware itself (the console) and has nothing to do with the skill of the mixing engineer. With the TDR Vos Slick EQ you get a variety of saturation flavors (only make a difference when gain is added) that may help with this pursuit.
