This video is not for the faint of heart. It shows a female puma stalking a guanaco (Patagonian relative of the llama), charging, and making the kill. The video was shot by my daughter just outside of Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile. The guanaco was probably twice as big as the puma. It was an awe-inspiring site - cruel, but it was nature in action and the circle of life. You can see the stealthy puma moving in at about 28 seconds into the video, and the charge begins just before 2 minutes. This trip was organized by Natural World Safaris through the Chilean group Quasar. We had a fantastic guide, Cristian Asun Miller, and amazing tracker, Roberto Donoso, and their great expertise enabled us to see almost 10 pumas total in a four day adventure! El Banco Central de la República Argentina (BCRA) presenta el documental “Nueva familia de billetes: Animales autóctonos de Argentina”, junto con seis cortometrajes que narran las historias de cada uno de los animales de la nueva familia de billetes. Cada uno tiene como protagonistas al hornero, el ave nacional y a su hábitat de la Región Centro; el yaguareté, en Región Noreste; la ballena franca austral, en el Mar Argentino, Antártida e islas del Atlántico sur; la taruca, en la Región Noroeste; el cóndor en la Región Andina y el guanaco de la estepa patagónica. Al igual que los billetes, tienen como fin resaltar la generosidad de la naturaleza y enfatizar la importancia de preservar y promover la biodiversidad. Con la elección de la fauna autóctona y regiones argentinas, el BCRA procura un punto de encuentro en el que todos los argentinos puedan sentirse representados en la moneda nacional.

El guanaco es un mamífero vertebrado de gran porte que habita la zona de estepa. Es considerada potencialmente vulnerable en la Argentina y Especie de Vertebrado de Valor Especial de conservación para el Parque, por tener un alto valor simbólico-ritual para la sociedad. El Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi tiene 57 especies de flora que por sus características particulares son consideradas de valor especial. En el nuevo Plan de Gestión institucional se priorizaron algunas de estas especies, siendo el Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) una de ellas, mediante el proyecto “Conservación del guanaco en el Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi”. En este marco los guardaparques de las seccionales Limay, Traful y La Lipela junto con el Área Biología de la Conservación, vienen monitoreando la especie hace varios años, para analizar su situación poblacional actual, amenazas y definir estrategias de conservación que garanticen la presencia y la dinámica natural de la especie en el Área Protegida. Invitamos a que puedan sumarse para conocer un poco más a esta especie que tenemos la oportunidad de observar y cuidar en el Parque Nacional.
