Overnight bike packing Santa Catalina Island, located off the coast of Southern California. Tips for making your trip easy to plan are at the bottom of the description. It is an hour and a half boat ride via the Catalina Express from Dana Point Harbor, South Orange County, Southern California to Avalon, the main town and harbor of Santa Catalina Island. The route is mostly gravel road, but starts with a very long and steep pavement climb averaging 10-12 percent incline grade for the first hour of riding. It is a total of approximately 26 miles one way, with 3,561 of elevation climbing from Avalon to Twin Harbors. The first 10.25 miles of the route, from Avalon to Catalina Airport in the Sky has 2,125 feet of elevation climbing and takes about 2 hours to bike, with 1,400 feet of the climbing taking place during the first 2.5 miles. The last 15.65 miles, from Catalina Airport in the Sky to Twin Harbors has 1,436 feet of elevation climbing and takes about 2 hours to bike. Tips for bike packing Santa Catalina Island... (1) Get your Catalina Conservancy Membership. It is $35 per year for 1 person, and includes your bike pass and 50% off Conservancy campgrounds. Your bike pass is valid for an entire year, so DO NOT discard it once your trip is complete. 🤍 (2) Reserve your campsite by contacting the Catalina Island Conservancy at 310-510-4205 🤍 * Make sure to tell them you are mountain biking the island. They will waive the 3 night minimum stay during peak season. * Request firewood as there are fire pits at the campsites. (3) Reserve your Catalina Express (Dana Point Harbor) seat by calling 1-800-613-1212 * Be sure to tell them you are bringing a bike (4) Get your bike pass when you arrive at Avalon Harbor by visiting the Catalina Island Conservancy. (It is located on the same side of the harbor that the Catalina Express docks on, where all the restaurants and shops start). (5) There is a public restroom on the second floor, above the Catalina Island Conservancy. (6) There is food available at multiple restaurants in Avalon, one restaurant at Catalina Airport, and at least one restaurant in Twin Harbors, so you don't need to bring a stove or a lot of food. I would bring a few energy bars, some snacks, and of course plenty of water. You can refill water at the airport, and there are water spigots at the Twin Harbors campground campsites, but I would still filter it with BeFree, Sawyer Squeeze, etc. (7) Clean porta potties were found at the campgrounds, so no need to bring a spade for digging cat holes. (8) Bring your swim suit as you will be camping close to the beach. (9) If you can afford to stay a second night, I would bike back to Avalon the next day and stay in a hotel room. That way you can secure you bike and personal belongings while you enjoy some other island activities, such as the various water sports, zip lines, etc. (10) Download the free smartphone app "Avenza Maps", then download the free "Catalina Island Trail Map". When you open the map, it will place a blue dot exactly where you are on the island. (11) Purchase a paper map from the Catalina Conservancy

As part of my North Wales Road Trip, I spent one day away from Snowdonia National Park, doing a mini Anglesey road trip. In this video, I visit the Menai bridge which crosses the Menai Strait, I take a self guided walking tour around the free to enter Parys Mountain - or Parys Mine. I go for a rough and ready exploration of the coastal Porth Wen Brickworks, before a quick pit stop at the South Stack Lighthouse where a mixture of both the lighthouse and 1000's of seabirds were a feast for the senses. As the day was getting on, we headed to Goleudy Twr Mawr or Llanddwyn lighthouse on Llanddwyn Island accidentally timing it perfectly for golden hour. The day was ended with a quick photostop at the train station in 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch' for a photo under the well known sign! I went to the US Virgin Islands for a week and this is what I brought - which was way too much. Here I show you what I actually wore and what I could have done without. Forgot to mention, on the airplane I wore the shirt I'm wearing in the video as well as a black maxi skirt. The skirt was perfect for the plane, but I didn't wear it any other time since it was too hot.. Also, it might look a bit weird, but I use plastic ziplock bags for packing - I think it allows organization and provides more room.
