While some Ashkenazi Jews may appear white and identify as such, the concept of whiteness is complex. Historically, Jews were considered a separate and inferior race and yet, over time, antisemitism, assimilation efforts and rising socioeconomic status have influenced the perception of “Jewish whiteness.” However, this categorization overlooks the experiences of Jews of Color and non-Ashkenazim and further perpetuates the ongoing antisemitism Jews face today. The libelous claim that Jews controlled the slave trade in the Americas began circulating in 1991, when an extremist organization known as the Nation of Islam claimed to have gathered 'irrefutable evidence' to prove it. More recently, the claim reared its ugly head when NBA star Kyrie Irving promoted the film “Hebrews to Negroes”, which makes some pretty outlandish allegations about the Jewish role in the slave trade. Although Jewish involvement in the slave trade was minimal, with only a few individuals participating, the overall perpetuation of this claim serves to fuel hatred and division among marginalized communities. Why all the hate for the Jews? Before we look at why people hate Jews, also known as Antisemitism, we need to define “Jew.” A Jew is someone who identifies with the cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who traces their ancestry to the ancient Hebrew people of Israel, all the way back to Abraham. Jewish people are considered an ethnoreligious group. Both an ethnic group and a religion. There are plenty who identify as Jews yet are not religious. Israel’s Law of Return, which is the law that gives Jews the right to visit and be a citizen of Israel, says a Jew is someone with either a Jewish mother or who has converted to Judaism. Anyway, during the time of Jesus in ancient Israel, many were of course Jewish, including Jesus himself. After Jesus died, his followers started a new religion called Christianity. As Christianity spread, and as more and more Roman emperors converted to the religion, Jews became marginalized in society, even though Jews worshipped the same God as Christians did. Roman rulers viewed the refusal of the Jewish community to accept Jesus as the Messiah as a threat. They straight up passed laws that discriminated against Jews. In the year 399, a law saying Jews couldn’t marry Christians, in 439, a law saying Jews couldn’t hold positions in government. In 531, a law saying they couldn’t appear as witnesses against Christians in court. Rumors began to spread that Jews had horns and tails, and that they killed Christian children and used their blood for rituals. In the Middle Ages, many societies forced Jews to live in segregated ghettos and wear special clothing. The Catholic Church did not allow Jews to own land, so Jews couldn’t build up wealth through property. However, the Church also didn’t let Christians loan money for profit. Jews could, so they often turned to money lending to build up wealth. Due to the fact that nearly every moneylender happened to be Jewish, this ended up creating a stereotype that Jews were greedy. I mean, people who loan money and charge interest throughout history have rarely been seen in a positive light, amIright? Christian rulers used Jewish money to build extravagant churches and build up armies. By the 11th century, Christianity dominated Europe, and the main minority religion was Judaism. Jews seemed to be the one group Christians could not convert, seen as outsiders. By this time, the Catholic Church was even teaching that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus. And then, the Black Death. During the 14th century, the bubonic plague spread quickly across Europe, killing around ⅓ of its entire population. Since this was before science, people had no idea what was causing it. Due to superstition and fear, and without any evidence whatsoever, Christians blamed Jews for causing the plague, accusing them of poisoning wells to spread the disease.

Even today, Jews are often depicted in the media as having extra-large and hooked noses, perpetuating the myth and hateful stereotype of the "Jewish nose." This stereotype has persisted for centuries, even though scientific studies have disproven the notion that Jewish noses are larger than those of other ethnicities. As a result, nose jobs have become a norm and are sometimes even encouraged within many Jewish communities. This harmful stereotype continues to affect the perception of Jewish people, despite the evidence against it. From medieval Christian art to Nazi propaganda imagery and even modern-day TV shows, Jews have been consistently portrayed as ugly, demonic, and dehumanized, often with exaggerated noses. This harmful representation has persisted throughout history, perpetuating negative stereotypes and fostering discrimination against Jewish people. While some Jews may share similar characteristics to other Middle Eastern peoples because the Jewish People originate from the Land of Israel, which is in the Middle East, the singular stereotype of the "Jewish nose" persists and serves as a dangerous and often harmful rhetoric that has no basis in reality. Though Ashkenazi Jews account for roughly 93% of Jews in America, Sephardic, Mizrahi and other types of Jews constitute a majority in Israel and many other places around the world. As a result, when Jewish people are depicted in the media, they often have the appearance of Jews who lived in Western and Eastern Europe, yet most Jews around the world don’t fit into this category. While the two largest groups of Jews in North America are Ashkenazi Jews from countries like Germany, France, and Eastern Europe, and Sephardic Jews from Portugal and Spain, there are also Mizrahi Jews from the Middle East, Ethiopian Jews, and so many more across the globe. Although there are many differences between these groups such as the languages they speak, the foods they eat, and even some Jewish customs and traditions they keep, they all share the core connection of Judaism and are a part of one peoplehood. Many will say that Messianic Jews are trying to "Christianize" Jews and take them away from their Jewish roots and Judaism. We truly believe that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Jewish Messiah and Savior of all people prophesied in the Hebrew Scriptures, and that He came right on time according to Scripture, and that God does not break his promises. As Jews that put our faith in who we believe to be the Jewish Messiah, we still remain Jews. Mendy Levy, who was born in Canada in 2003, recalled being forced to swim in freezing cold, snake-filled water and eat hot pepper if he told a lie. When he was 15 years old, he was told he had to marry his 12 year old cousin, and that was the last straw for him. Mendy said the group, which was founded by Shlomo Helbrans in the 1980s, was about 'total control.' 'You can't do anything without permission. And if they ask you do something, you have to do it,' he recalled to Insider. 'They don't want people to see the outside world. No one is able to go anywhere without the leader's permission.' Mendy recalled a time when a woman, who was allergic to sesame seeds, was told she had to eat them after to prove 'her faith' to the rabbi. 'Two hours later, she died,' he said. 'As she was suffering from the allergic reaction, they didn't let her call an ambulance. They don't allow doctors in Lev Tahor without the rabbi's permission. They told us to trust the rabbi.' Something similar happened to his father - who developed an infection in 2016 and needed to go to the hospital. 'The rabbi said no,' Mendy explained. 'My father wasn't eating. He wasn't walking. He got sicker and sicker over a week and a half. And that's how it ended. He died on October 25, 2016.' During his days at Lev Tahor, Mendy said he woke up at 5:30 in the morning every day. After attending shul (synagogue), all the boys were forced to go into a freezing cold river that was filled with snakes for a ritual called mikvah. After that, it was back to shul for morning prayer, also called Shacharis - which would last three hours. Then, they were required to listen to the rabbi's speech, which sometimes lasted six or seven hours. The rest of the day was spent either in shul or in class. But school was different than you'd expect - there was no science, English or math class. Mendy explained that Shlomo had written all of his own books, and that he wanted everyone to know them by heart, so the kids were required to spend all of their free time studying them - and nothing else. 'We didn't even know what the word "science" meant. We didn't speak a word of English. No reading,' he said. 'If you write "ABC" in Lev Tahor, you get a punishment. We don't know what Trump is. We don't know what Biden is. I barely knew what the Holocaust was at the time. No iPhone, no computers, nothing like that unless you were one of the leaders.' When it came to eating, Mendy said he was forced to skip meals all the time. He also recalled being 'physically and mentally abused.' He said, 'There's the hitting, the beating up. If someone says a lie - even a small child - they would take hot pepper, the powder, and make them swallow it. After getting hit or beaten, you had to kiss the hand of whoever just hit you and thank him.' He also said that there was no affection allowed in Lev Tahor, which was made up of about 60 families in total. Parents weren't allowed to hug their kids - and if they were ever caught having a positive connection with them, the children would be 'taken away and placed in a different house.' 'Why? Because they want everyone to believe, listen, and trust only them. If a leader hits you, they don't want you to go to your mother crying. So they cut off the connection between you and your parents,' he added. Mendy called Shlomo a 'genius' due to his ability to 'brainwash and control a few hundred people for years.' 'People would believe him and follow his society,' Mendy explained. 'They made us look at the outside world like it was the worst and we're the only ones who are the best. 'They made us believe Lev Tahor is the only authentic form of Judaism in the world, and that it's better to die than to leave. The 18-year-old said that after the group moved from Canada to Guatemala in 2014, he had a nervous breakdown. 'My brain just stopped working because of all this pain. I was thinking of committing suicide. I just exploded,' he recalled. 'I was in the hospital for about half a year. Until then, I didn't understand the things around me were wrong. Most kids wouldn't understand it was wrong. 'But in the hospital, I started thinking differently. I got a different perspective from everyone else in the cult. It was then I started thinking about how I could leave Lev Tahor.' In 2017, Shlomo drowned in a river during a trip to Mexico, and his son, Nachman Helbrans, took over. According to Mendy, life in the group got even worse after that. Read More at 🤍

The Jewish community has faced increasing antisemitism and overt discrimination in the United States. In 2022, the Anti-Defamation League tabulated 3,697 antisemitic incidents throughout the United States, an all-time high. Holocaust knowledge is lowest among Millenials and Gen Z, creating pathways for antisemitism to grow through the trivialization and denial of the Holocaust. CUT stands with our Jewish friends and family in condemning antisemitism and celebrating the diversity and complexity of Jewish history and identity. It was the evening of October 1st, 1943, when German Police and members of the Danish SS descended on Copenhagen with orders to round up and deport Denmark’s Jewish population. It was the night of the Jewish New Year - Rosh HaShanah - and the German Police were expecting to find Jewish families at home celebrating. What they found instead was empty house after empty house. Someone had tipped off the Jewish community... By the end of the war, over 95% of Denmark's nearly eight thousand Jews would escape Denmark, and avoid becoming victims of the Holocaust. This survival rate is extraordinary, unfortunately, this was not the case across the rest of Nazi-occupied Europe. To find out why, we need to go back to 1940. This year, I went back to New York and revisited Rabbi Yoni Katz. He welcomed me enthusiastically into his home to meet the family and show me what it takes to maintain and Jewish home. I also met with Rivky, Yoni's wife who also welcomes people from outside the community on to tours around the neighbourhood. Rivky tells me about how Hasidic Jews meet their partners and the role of motherhood in the religion. She talked about the yearning of a woman holding the family together. Brocha, Rivky's mother, takes us to her favourite room of the house, The Kosher Kitchen, and tells us what makes food 'Kosher'. Watch the first video, HANGING WITH HASIDICS here: 🤍 - Rabbi Yoni Katz takes us on a journey around his Crown Heights, an area in Brooklyn know for both the growing Hasidic community and their newer hipster locals. Rabbi Yoni has chosen a path to "Unite the Beards", taking anyone who is interested on a guided tour around this often seen as closed part of the neighbourhood. Rabbi Yoni Katz wants to show the true life and character of this neighbourhood and to bring the communities living there closer. On the tour we were taken to the main synagogue 770 Eastern Parkway as well as to local homes and the main streets, interviewing as we went. The tours are run by himself and his wife and teach the customs and traditions to anyone who wishes to join them to learn about their neighbours.
