It explains the basics, like how to connect to the internet or how to change settings, but it also presents a bunch of great features Plasma has and never really talked about before. While Kwin won't replace a full tiling window manager, it now has the ability to create tiling layouts, and then to place windows in the various tiles you created. To set up a tiling layout, you press Super + T, and you'll get that overview, with a default layout, in 3 columns. And then, once your layout suits you, all you have to do is drag a window while holding Shift, and your window will automatically occupy the tiling zone it's sitting above. The widgets and tools have received so many improvements that even in this lengthy section, I can't list them all. First, Krunner got a, update to surface more relevant search results. When hovering over widgets, they'll tell you what you can expect if you middle click them. The tooltips have also been greatly improved. The calendar widget now also supports the Hebrew calendar. The battery monitor shows the status of connected devices, the media applet now has 2 layouts, one for horizontal panels, and one for vertical panels, with the album art only. The color picker can now show up to 9 colors, and clicking a color will automatically copy it to the clipboard, with a notification. The weather widget can now display the temperature in the task bar. Folder view now lets you show hidden folders, pop up notes will make links clickable by default, and Kickoff now supports separators in the menu. The wallpaper list should be much faster, changing wallpapers now uses a transition animation. Floating panels will be automatically de floated when a window touches them, and they'll use less padding and less space in that defloated mode. The breeze theme now has an outline around windows in dark mode, which makes them more easy to parse at a glance, trying to use a VPN will prompt you to install the relevant plugin. Plasma now supports high resolution scrolling under wayland, and they now support content types, which lets the compositor adjust the display's refresh rate depending on what you're doing. Fractional scaling is also now natively supported under Wayland. When sharing your screen on wayland, the window picker will now have thumbnails to let you decide what you want to share. And there's also a new setting to let Xwayland application access global shortcuts. Plasma revamped multi monitor support, so all panels, windows, wallpapers, and widgets are saved per monitor, and restored when a monitor is plugged back in. Next are flatpak permissions. They have their own new settings page, that lets you review what applications have access to, and give them more permissions, or remove some. Discover will now show more flatpak permissions on application pages. The homepage has received a new look. The "all applications" button is also now back in the sidebar, and when you're searching for something, if nothing is available, you'll get a message and a button to search the whole store.

I applied a bunch of tweaks to it, from using Latte Dock to achieve a look and feel I liked, to changing the widget theme, the position of window controls, making windows appear centered, and other small tweaks here and there. If you want to achieve a similar look, you can follow a video from linux Scoop, I left a link in the description below. I didn't apply everything he did there, I mainly took the Latte Dock and plasma themes. Now that this is out of the way, let's begin with what I liked about KDE Plasma. 🤍 ## What I liked Apart from completely changing the layout, the number of small things you can change is just amazing: from how the task manager looks and behaves, to which notification icons you want to see and when, or the clock style, you can really change everything you want. I also enjoy the widget system, that you can add to your desktop. I added my Video folder, and a few system monitoring ones,, but that's just the tip of the iceberg here. There are hundreds of widgets you can download from the Plasma, let's call it "store" for lack of a better word. It was nice to rediscover notification icons, especially how they've been integrated in plasma. They all feel part of the same interface, which is rare. Usually, you get a disjointed collection of icons of varying shapes, sizes and colors, but here, they're all looking nice and similar, and I must admit I had missed them quite a lot on elementary OS. Having a full-featured menu is also very refreshing. It's not just a list of apps, or categories, you also get access to your favorite folders, your recent files history, and, more importantly, it has file search. Another thing that I missed, is KDE Connect. I used it on elementary OS, but there is no way to really integrate it, especially since the elementary OS notification system doesn't really support actionable notifications, so there was no way to answer messages, or share files, so it was a glorified remote control. ## What I don't like Of course, not everything is roses and rainbows. There are things that I don't really like about KDE as a desktop environment. The default theme, in light mode, is pretty bland and looks a bit old, especially the buttons. I'm using the daark theme which kinda resolves the issue, but the default applications theme really needs an update, in my opinion. My main issue here is with applications. The default suite of applications in KDE is very inconsistent. On the one hand, you have apps that have really simple defaults, and a lot of power under the hood if you need it, like Dolphin. On the other hand, you have applications that really want you to see every single feature, panel, and option available, right out of the box, like the Calendar. There also seem to be a less sizable community developing KDE apps as on GNOME or elementary OS. A lot of the apps are pretty old, and look it, like Korganizer, or Kmail. I couldn't find a todo list application along the lines of Getting Things GNOME or Planner. I couldn't find an equivalent to Audacity for the KDE desktop. Of course, you can always install non-KDE apps on KDE, and that's what I did, with the GIMP, Planner, or Audacity. And that's where KDE grabs the advantage again: it integrates GTK apps a lot better than GNOME integrates Qt apps. The fact that you can choose any theme you want for GTK apps under KDE is great, because it means these things will look a lot better integrated, and not feel so alien. Using KDE apps on GNOME or Elementary OS is a weird experience, as they really don't look or feel native, but GTK apps on KDE feel just at home. Now I praised the avalanche of settings before, and I'm not going to apologize for it, but it's also a bit of a hassle sometimes to find a specific thing you're looking for.

Banner and callbacks 12:57 KDE's power is wasted because no one knows it's there 14:52 Sponsor: grab a device that runs Linux perfectly! 15:44 Support the channel Let's start with Activities, something KDE never really talks about or promotes in any way. An Activity is a group of virtual desktops. You can switch activities easily with a keyboard shortcut, and they have their own switcher tool. Each activity can have its own name, wallpaper, set of plasma widgets, and virtual desktops. WHich means you can create a work activity, with a certain set of widgets that let you work more easily, and a less distracting wallpaper, and a personal activity, where you can have all the anime characters you want as a background, different widgets, and even different apps running. Now let's talk Kwin, the window manager / compositor. You can extend it, thanks to custom Kwin scripts. It can force background blur on certain windows, have sticky window snapping, so you can resize 2 adjacent windows in one go, there's Krohnkite, a script that turns Kwin into a full blown tiling window manager, you can maximize new windows to a new virtual desktop, like on mac OS, or shake a window to minimize all others. By default, KDE Plasma also has KDE Connect, a wonderful tool that lets you basically replicate what apple does with their iOS and macOS devices: install the companion app on your Android phone, or iPhone, and pair the 2. And that's just a few things most KDE users probably never even knew existed. There are tons more, like Krunner. Press Alt + space, and you get a full on search box. You can have an application launcher as a right click on the desktop, instead of a context menu. You can apply a whole theme in just one click from the appearance tab. You can replace any plasma widget by another through the "show alternatives" menu item. You can replicate any desktop from any other operating system. Thing is, no one ever told KDE users they could do that, and that's the main problem with KDE. Fortunately, KDE devs seem to have understood that problem, because they're already working on a Welcome application: 🤍 But that doesn't solve our power problem: it only addresses the basics everyone already knows they'll be able to do in any OS. It doesn't tell people about what they can do specifically on KDE. The welcome app should offer predefined layouts to let people know that this is a capability they have. Or, even better, have a "+" button to let someone create their own layout. The Welcome app should probably also be the entry point for themes. KDE has a few out of the box, just as a dark or light mode, or midnight mode, but you could also use that opportunity to tell people about the "Get new stuff" buttons that permeate all the customization throughout the desktop. DIsplay these default all in one themes, and a very visible "get more themes" button right from the start. The Welcome app is also the perfect entry point to talk about KDE Connect. For activities, there's a simple path as well. When a user enters the settings for Activities, or maybe uses virtual desktops for a while, you can just prompt them with a small notification, easily dismissed, or just a simple banner in the settings that might be related to virtual desktops. Same goes for all Kwin scripts and all extensions: instead of hiding the kwin scripts in their own settings page, you could also make them more visible in the default window options.

It's extendable with extensions, it's customizable, and it's also themable. Now GNOME as a desktop, I find really nice to use, but there are things that bug me, like the rigidity and lack of basic options, and that means it will be in Good, not in Great. KDE has simple defaults, powerful options, plenty of customization and a large ecosystem of applications. I used KDE a TON, I always have a laptop with it installed, and it was my main DE for more than a year of running this youtube channel. It used to have a lot of bugs and stability issues, but in my experience, that's not the case anymore. I'm going to put KDE in the Great category. Budgie, I used for a while on Manjaro, as my main desktop environment. At the time, I would have put it in Good. Nowadays? It's a No, Thanks for me. Budgie is basically GNOME + some interesting addons. You can replicate it in seconds on GNOME and have a better underlying platform. XFCE, on the surface, looks very old and ugly, it doesn't really support most of the new Linux stack, like Wayland, it's not a complete experience, without its own app center for example, and it seems stuck in the past. On the other hand, it's extremely fast and responsive, it's customizable with themes, layouts, panel applets, and it can use most other DEs apps to fill in the gaps. I'm going to put it in Decent. Mate is another hard one. I loved GNOME 2 back in the day, and MATE is exactly that. That layout was wonderful, but nowadays, it suffers from the same problems as XFCE: no real wayland support, no 1:1 touchpad gestures, not a complete experience, without its own app store, or design philosophy or guidelines. MATE is going in the Decent category. Cinnamon is what Linux Mint uses, and it's pretty damn complete. It has applications for basically everything out of the box, you can do everything graphically without needing to turn to a third party app, whether it's managing software sources, installing applications, installing packages, changing every setting, you name it. So, Cinnamon goes in the GOOD category. It's a really nice choice, but compared to KDE? I can't place them on the same level. Deepin Desktop is one that looks phenomenal on the surface, but that I could never use day to day. Sure, it's beautiful, and it has a design flair and fluidity that is quite remarkable. But the default apps are way too simple and can do in most cases even less than GNOME's, which are already pretty barebones, their appstore is completely useless, and even translations are quite hesitant I just can't see why you'd pick Deepin. It's a No Thanks for me. Pantheon, elementary OS's desktop had the edge over any other GTK based desktop, 2 or 3 years ago, but it has lost every advantage it had during this time period. The team just doesn't feel like it's big enough to tackle a whole distro + desktop + suite of apps anymore, and GNOME has caught up to everything. It's a No, thanks. Unity is only Decent for me, because it looks pretty dated. The panel and its applets are straight from the GNOME 2 era, there isn't much customization to be had either, the dash isn't as useful as it once was, because using filters at the bottom isn't super intuitive or ergonomic with a mouse, and while it's a fun trip down memory lane for me, it doesn't really appeal to me all that much. And now there's Cutefish, the it was dead but apparently it's not dead, sort of desktop. And it's another one that looks great on screenshots, but it's still going to be a No Way.

Layan has a GTK variant. To install it, click the "Configure GNOME / GTK application styles" in the Application Style panel, then "Get new GNOME- GTK Application styles". Search for Layan, and click "install". For the icons, I use the "Inverse-blue-dark" icons, which you can get from the "Get new icons" button. The plasma theme is also the "Layan" theme, you can get it from the "Get new plasma styles" button. The window decorations I use are called Layan. You can get them from the "'Get New Window decorations". The widgets I use are called "Window title applet", "Latte separator", "Better Inline clock", and "latte spacer". I have a top bar with a global menu, and a dock to run and manage running apps. I don't use the regular Plasma panels to get that result, though, I use latte dock. Latte can import layouts: Then, right click on the dock, and select "Edit dock", then right click on it again, and select "Layouts - edit layouts". Here, you have an "Import" button, select "Import from local file" and go select my layout. If you'd prefer to see each tweak I made, here we go: - The main dock, I haven't changed much. I removed every applet there that wasn't latte tasks, and every separator. In the Appearance settings, I set an absolute size of 48, disabled zoom on hover. I added a 10% margin, with 15% thickness, and added 8px between the dock and the screen edge. The background is 50% opaque, with a 34% radius and 29px shadow. I also enabled blur and shadows. Now, for the top panel. - Right click on the dock, and select "edit dock", then right click again and select "Ad dock / panel", then "Empty panel" In that panel, I added the following widgets: - Application launcher: I configured the applet by changing its icon, I used the draw-circle icon that's available from the "All" icons drop down menu. - Window Title widget. I configured it to only display the application name, and not to show the icon. The name is written in bold. - Latte separator, and the global menu - I then added a latte spacer, followed by the better inline clock widget. I configured it to have a font size of 16px, and show the date and separator, using a 24h clock. - Finally, there's another latte spacer and finally, the system tray widget from the base Plasma desktop. Having both latte spacers use the setting "fill available space" makes the clock centered. In terms of how the panel is laid out, I set it to appear on the top edge, and checked the "Hide floating gap for maximized windows" box. In the Appearance tab, I set it to be 28px, with a max length of 98% so it doesn't extent to the full length of the display. I added an 8px gap from the screen edge, and no margins at all on the panel. It's 50% opaque, with blur and shadows enabled, and has a 34% radius, with 29px shadows. I didn't change the Effects tab, but here it is just in case.

Using Linux at work - KDE Edition

Improve your VM patching workflow with QEMUCare: 🤍 Get your Linux desktop or laptop here: 🤍 This is an update on the Linux at work series I started a while ago! At the time, I was using elementary OS on a Huawei matebook 13, to work as a Product Owner. Since then, remote work became a lot more prevalent, and I also changed distros, and laptops, so let's see how I'm making Linux and KDE work as my primary OS, on my laptop, and desktop! Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 Linux Scoop video for the Edna Theme: 🤍 ## What I do Let's begin with what I do: I'm a product owner, which means I'm basically a specification writer, tester, and planner all at once. I have to plan our development sprints in advance, write the specifications that our developers will follow to code what we need on our apps and websites, and work with our graphics designer to make nice mockups of the new features. This means I need a versatile system that can let me multitask easily, and has a wide variety of applications. ## What I use at home So there are 2 parts for what I use: I work from home 3 days a week, and at the office the other 2 days. Which means I have 2 setups: one with my laptop, and one with my desktop. Let's start with the one you guys might be more familiar with: the desktop. It's the same hardware I use to run the channel: my Slimbok Kymera desktop, with a ryzen 7 5800X CPU, an RTX 3070, 32Gb of RAM, and 2Tb of SSD. It's plugged in to my LG 35' ultrawide, with a 1440p resolution and 100hz refresh rate. On top of that, I use an MX Master 2S, and the slimbook RGB Keyboard. In terms of software, the desktop runs Manjaro KDE. It's heavily customized: I use latte dock to add a dock at the bottom of the screen, and a top panel with the applications menu, a global menu bar, the date and time, and the indicators. I use the Edna theme for Kvantum and plasma, with the inverse-blue icons, and I switched my titlebar buttons to have close and minimize on the left, and maximize on the right. This layout is great on an ultrawide screen like this one: all my apps are centered on the dock, so they're super easy to reach, and if the menubar doesn't take space on each of my window, it's hidden on the top bar, where I can just fling my mouse up and access it when I need to, which is very rarely. I use 2 KDE activities. If you're not familiar with these, they basically give you multiple sets of virtual desktops you can use, with different wallpapers, widgets and applications. I have my "default" activity, which is the one I use when I'm working on the channel, gaming, or just doing unproductive stuff on the internet. And I have my "Work activity", where I do, well, all things related to my day job. On the default activity, I have a few widgets related to my computer's performance, and the weather. On the work activity, I have a less colorful, simpler wallpaper, and different widgets: - A color picker - a calculator - A network speed monitor - A sticky note widget ## What I use at the office Now, let's see what the office setup looks like. I use a Slimbook Pro X 14, which is a fantastic laptop I just got, decked out with my logo on the back and on the super key. It has an 8 core Ryzen 7 4800H, with integrated vega graphics, 16Gb of RAM, and 256Gb of SSD. It's fast, responsive, has about 6 to 7h of battery life, and I can even play some games on my lunch break, which is a nice plus. The display is 1080p, which is just the right size for a 14'' laptop, and it has really good viewing angles, and a nice port selection, with 3 USB ports, and ethernet jack, a full HDMI port, an audio jack, and a USB C port. This laptop is plugged in to an external display, wich is a basic Iiyama 23 inch 1080p screen, and I use a super janky black usb mouse, with an apple bluetooth keyboard. In terms of software, the laptop runs KDE Neon. The layout is pretty much bog standard: I don't use latte dock here, or a global menu. I want to have as much screen real estate as possible, and since I very rarely use the menubar anyway, and mostly use one window at a time, one on each monitor, I'm not bothered by the fact that apps have menubars in KDE. The theme is just Breeze Dark, which I kinda like, but might change for Edna in the future, to be more coherent with my desktop.

Kalendar is an app to handle your calendars, but also your tasks. It integrates with your online accounts. Plan is a project management application, that lets you handle tasks and subtasks, but it goes a lot deeper. Calligra Suite is KDE's Office suite, great if you work on your own documents, and the ODF format. For personal budgets, you have Skrooge. For video editing, use Kdenlive. It's a full featured non linear video editor that lets you manage video and audio using tracks. It has tons of effects you can apply, transitions, and it can import and export to a TON of formats. For artists, there is no better drawing tool on Linux than Krita. It's a digital painting appplication with tons of tools and brushes to let you create what you want. It's not only on Linux but also on Android, so you could even use it there, and it handles graphic tablets and their lovely styluses. If, like me, you're no artist, but you still want a simple app to edit screenshots, or draw a few doodles here and there, Kolourpaint is going to be your go-to. It's basically MS Paint for KDE with anti aliasing, which of course you can disable if you like that pixel art look. If you have a local music collection, and you're looking for a simple, but nice looking music player, then Elisa is the one for you. Kasts is a small podcast app. You can add your own podcast feeds, or search for a specific podcast in the discover tab, and add it this way. You'll get a list of all episodes that you can then download and play. KDE Connect it basically lets you integrate your Android phone, or iPhone, with your desktop. You can send files to and from each device, use the phone as a remote for audio or presentations, or as a trackpad, and more. Subtitle Composer lets you create subtitles for your videos, or for someone else's videos. You have tons of options to make them look like you want, open an existing file to modify it, select which language you're working on, and export your file. With Yakuake, you just press F12, or any other key you prefer, and yo get a nice little terminal that drops down from the top of your screen. Sweeper lets you clean a bunch of stuff that might take up space on your hard drive, like various caches, cookies, web history, recent documents, command history, and more. Krusader is a file manage that handles archives in the file manager, FTP, has multiple panels to open folders side by side, sync folders, compare file contents, it can batch rename and is completely customizable, on top of having a super powerful search module.
