I'm pronouncing Mycenaean & Mycenae with a hard "K" sound because that's how it sounds in Greek, and I would not be so impolite as to mispronounce the name of the first Greek-speaking civilization in history. During the second part of the 12th century BCE, the Mycenaean Greece was inevitably disintegrating and fading into the Dark Ages. The event that finally put an end to the Mycenaean era was known among the ancient Greeks as the "Return of the Heracleidae", where the northern warlords, allied with the Dorian tribes, marched on Peloponnese and defeated the Mycenaean king Tisamenus, the final Achaean ruler of the peninsula. The Minoans and the Mycenaeans were both powerful civilizations of the Bronze Age Aegean, and often they are through to follow one after the other. However, this comparison video will detail through some of the similarities and differences between the Minoans and Mycenaeans, and the transmission of culture, practices and art which occurred between the two groups. The Palace of Knossos is the most famous of the Minoan palatial centres, with its iconic bull leaping fresco and labyrinthine architecture layout. The prominence of the bull at Knossos links it to the mythological story of Theseus, King Minos, Ariadne and the Minotaur. The palatial centres of Mycenaean Greece are smaller than those on Crete, and we know more about how the centres functioned due to the Linear B archives, with the greatest number being found on Pylos. The Mycenaeans had fortifications so large around most of the centres which were called 'Cyclopean', with the most outstanding being at Mycenae and Tiryns. However, they are not found at the site of the Palace of Nestor at Pylos. The grand centres of the Minoans did not have any type of fortifications, potentially due to different threats. The Minoans and Mycenaeans shared facets of their cultures with each other, however due to the Minoans being present on Crete earlier than the Mycenaeans on mainland Greece, the Minoans had a greater influence on the Mycenaeans, rather than the other way around. They had a preference with trading with each other, and the Mycenaeans chose to be buried with a great number of Mycenaean crafts, and adopted many of their iconographic motifs. -WATCH NEXT- The Minoans: A Civilization of Bronze Age Crete- 🤍 The Mycenaeans: A Civilization of Bronze Age Greece- 🤍 -CHAPTERS- 0:00 Introduction 1:35 Trade 3:25 Art and Craftsmanship 4:51 Palatial Centres, Fortifications and Writing 7:09 Burial Practices 8:33 Religion and Ritual 12:10 Images and Attributions -READ MORE HERE- Minoan Civilization- 🤍 Mycenaean Civilization- 🤍 Minoan Frescoes- 🤍 Minoan Art- 🤍 Knossos- 🤍 Mycenaean Art- 🤍 Mycenae- 🤍 Linear B- 🤍 Uluburun Shipwreck- 🤍 — BUY OUR MERCH — 🤍/ — SUPPORT US VIA OUR PATREON— 🤍 World History Encyclopedia 🤍 -ATTRIBUTIONS- IMAGES: 🤍 The music used in this recording is the intellectual copyright of Michael Levy, a prolific composer for the recreated lyres of antiquity, and used with the creator's permission. The classical Greeks weren't the first kids on the Aegean block. Long before Athens' golden age, before Homer, and even before the Trojan War, there was a civilization on the island of Krete. The land of King Minos was home to beautiful palaces, a fascinatingly-complex economy, and something approximating Bull-Cthulu. It's a fun time, let's jump in. History documentary on the Mycenaean Chariots of the Trojan War! Get Total War Saga: Troy for free on the Epic store if you claim it in the first 24 hours of launch on August 13th 🤍 This history documentary takes our Units of History series to the Bronze Age to cover the Mycenaean Chariots of the Trojan War! We begin the episode by looking at the history of chariots starting with the very domestication of the horse. This led to the development of early horse drawn wagons which were turned into battle carts by the Sumerians. By the early Bronze Age, most of the major kingdoms of the near east had incorporates war chariots into their army. The Egyptian Kingdom deployed chariots with 2 man crews of a driver and an archer while the Hittite Kingdom deployed chariots with 3 men crews of a driver, a shield bearer, and a spearman. These war chariots of the bronze age would clash famously at the Battle of Kadesh. We then talk about how the chariot made its way to ancient Greece and the Mycenaean kingdoms of the Bronze Age. Here it went through several stages of development which includes the box chariot, the quadrant chariot, the dueling chariot, and finally the rail chariot. We take a look at the sort of equipment and crew associated with each of these and ancient bronze age warfare. Next we talk about bronze age battlefield tactics derived from historical depictions and works by homer like the Illiad which describes the events of the Trojan War. Finally we cover the service history of the Mycenaean chariot and its eventual decline following the bronze age collapse. Watch part one here: 🤍 In part two of this series Hugh Newman explores the Treasury of Atreus and the Lion Tomb, both at Mycenae in Greece. They are stunning Tholos Tombs with massive megalithic doorways and beehive stone roofs showing remarkable stone working sophistication. The Treasury of Atreus was constructed during the Bronze Age around 1250 BC. The stone lintel above the doorway weighs 120 tons. Also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon, it is the largest and most impressive of the nine tholos tombs at Mycenae. The tomb stands by itself, located well away from the other ‘royal’ tombs. The Lion Tomb, situated just outside the citadel walls, suffered the collapse of its tholos, and now offers a wide-open view and dates to around 1350 BC. It has massive megalithic blocks and huge lintels, shaped and curved like the lintels of Stonehenge. Includes exclusive aerial footage. Copyright Megalithomania 2019. All Rights Reserved. The Mycenaeans are considered the earliest Greeks, and were a prosperous civilization of the Late Bronze Age on the Greek mainland. This video is an introduction into the history of the Mycenaean civilization, and takes you through the rise, fall and legacy of the first Greeks. The great city of Mycenae was discovered by Heinrich Schliemann, who has a preoccupation for mythology, and believed he had found the home of the legendary Agamemnon. Schliemann went so far as to name a death mask, the mask of Agamemnon and a tholos or beehive tomb the Tomb of Agamemnon, even though it dated 400 years too early. The Mycenaeans are best known through Greek Mythology and the Trojan war, known to us through Homer's Iliad. The legendary Greek heroes Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and Menelaus, king of Sparta were Mycenaeans, who led the Achaeans to the ten year Trojan war to retrieve the abducted Helen of Troy, Menelaus' wife. Agamemnon is known through multiple Greek tragedies including The Oresteia by Aeschylus and Iphigeneia at Aulis by Euripides. This video will take you through the history and mythology of the Mycenaeans, and ask how much of the history of the Mycenaeans is really true?
