In a huge feat of engineering, HS2 Ltd has delivered the world’s longest box slide to move a 12,600 tonne bridge into place over the M42 in Warwickshire. Around 450 people from HS2’s construction contractor in the Midlands – Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) – slid a 12,600 tonne bridge a record 163 metres to position it across a motorway in Warwickshire. The site team worked around the clock to move HS2’s Marston Box bridge into place over the M42 during the Christmas period. The dramatic operation took 40 hours, at a speed of 4 metres per hour, from Saturday 24 to Monday 26 December during a 10-day closure of the motorway between Junctions J9 and J10 (northbound and southbound). The motorway is on schedule to reopen at 0500 on Tuesday, 3 January 2023. Over the last six months, the giant 86 metre-long structure was built on land next to the motorway. The structure, developed by a Design Joint Venture of Mott MacDonald and Systra, working on behalf of BBV, has a base, three walls and top slab. The sliding mechanism, designed by specialist civil and structural engineering company Freyssinet, allowed the box to be pushed into place over the motorway on a guiding raft over a distance of 163 metres – which is believed to be the world’s longest box slide. On completion, the whole structure will be around 190 metres in length, and will carry HS2 over the motorway as it heads north to Crewe, or on its southward journey as it loops into Birmingham Curzon Street or continues straight on to Interchange Station in Solihull, Old Oak Common Station and London Euston. Once built, the railway bridge will connect to Dunton Wood Embankment to the south and the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Viaduct, which crosses the heritage canal, to the north. This construction method, which allowed it to be moved into place in one movement meant only two one-week closures of the motorway over a 12-month period, dramatically reducing disruption for road users. What can an architect bring to the design of a bridge? In 2012, the City of Los Angeles held a design competition to redesign its 6th Street Viaduct. The original, iconic bridge, which served as the backdrop for dozens of TV shows and films, had deteriorated beyond repair. The winning team included Michael Maltzan Architecture, who helped conceive and design a bridge that does way more than just connect traffic across the LA River. Newly released time-lapse footage shows complex preparation work for HS2’s Marston Box bridge over the M42 during a week’s closure of a section of the motorway in December 2021. The video shows the Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) site team working around the clock to deliver the intricately planned operation in just seven days. During the M42 closure between Junction 9 and 10, carried out in collaboration with National Highways, the team removed the existing surface of the motorway where the bridge will be located, created a three metre deep cutting, installed and connected new drainage, created foundations and improved the stability of the ground to support the weight of the bridge. They also replaced motorway barriers, and installed additional safety barriers and a new surface to enable the motorway to re-open to road users on time. The work was carried out in preparation for the UK’s first ‘box slide’ of a railway bridge over a motorway. The innovative technique involves building the entire structure on land next to the motorway and then using a guide raft to slide it into place. This dramatically cuts down disruption to road users and forms part of HS2’s plan to reduce the impact of construction on local communities. Jammu and Kashmir railway link project between Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla, a 272-km railway line being built at Rs 27,949 crore is one of the most challenging projects Indian Railways has undertaken. The upcoming railway route will also see the construction of the world's highest railway bridge and India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. Though out of the total length of the railway line which is 272 km, 161 km has already been completed, the newly appointed Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who has recently reviewed the project, asked railways to complete the remaining part between Katra and Banihal by August 15, 2022. The Dhubri - Phulbari bridge, planned to be completed by 2026, would be India’s longest bridge over water and would span more than 19 km. This bridge, close to the Bangladesh border, will connect Assam's Dhubri with Meghalaya's Phulbari which is also a missing link of National Highway 127B. Civil works starts in 2020. This is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency and it would be executed by NHIDCL. Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has bagged the contract to construct India's longest river bridge. This is one of 6 proposed bridges on the Brahmaputra. The bridge is the longest bridge over a river in India, spanning over more than 19 km. It will feature a navigation bridge of 12.625 km approach viaducts of 3.5 km on the Dubri side and 2.2 km on the Phulbari side, connected with approach roads and interchanges on both sides. It is located near the Bangladesh border and will connect Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya- a missing link of NH 127-B. The bridge is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and it would be executed by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation(NHIDCL). A major civil engineering operation is underway in Great Yarmouth today as the bridge leaves are installed at Herring Bridge. Herring Bridge is being delivered by BAM Farrans Joint Venture for Norfolk County Council and it will be open to the public during the summer of 2023. Two leaves of 45m by 24m are being installed during a 72 hour river possession which started at 08:00 21st March. Each leaf weighs 700 tonnes and a further 500 tonnes of heavy weight concrete per leaf is poured to create the counter weight. When both leaves are up their will be 50m of navigable channel between to the two bascule chambers. The east leaf took nine hours to install and the west leaf is happening now and should be in place this afternoon. The construction stage started in January 2021 with the accommodation, enabling and demolition works. This is followed by the in river marine works and construction of the approach embankments which will support two underpass and the bascule bridge (opening bridge). Once complete the local road network will be upgraded with a five-arm roundabout and dual carriageway. The bridge will link the A47 at Harfrey’s roundabout to the port and the enterprise zone on the other side of the river. It will ease traffic congestion on the town’s roads, shortening journey times and improving journey reliability, as well as supporting wider plans and work to maximise investment, regeneration and economic growth opportunities in the town and wider borough. It’s a simple innovation that helped win a war. The Bailey bridge was Donald Bailey’s innovative solution to a number of wartime obstacles. The allies needed a way to cross bodies of water quickly, but bombed-out bridges — or an absence of crossings entirely — made that incredibly difficult. That was only compounded by new, heavy tanks that needed incredibly strong support. Bailey’s innovation — a modular, moveable panel bridge — solved those problems and gave the allies a huge advantage. The 570-pound steel panel could be lifted by just six men, and the supplies could fit inside small service trucks. Using those manageable materials, soldiers could build crossings sufficient for heavy tanks and other vehicles. As impressive, the Bailey bridge could be rolled across a gap from one side to the other, making it possible to build covertly or with little access to the other side. Together, all the Bailey bridge’s advantages changed bridge construction and may have helped win the war. Further reading: John A.
