This benchmarks multi-GPU with the RTX 3090 video cards, testing SLI with a new NVLink bridge, an EVGA 3090 FTW3, and an NVIDIA Founders Edition card. It's not easy to set up, but it does work. You really need to get the same card for ideal mating, because the SLI fingers are not standardized for placement and can be misaligned. Because of this, we ran a second test bench (no motherboard on that one) with PCIe risers, then a whole mess of mounting hardware. It took about 4-6 hours to get it all built and functional, but it worked well once assembled. Of course, we would never recommend this setup, but it was a "because we can" and "let's see what it does" approach. nVidia's new GeForce GTX 680 running in a Quad SLI setup. The SLI and Triple-SLI benchmarks were run on our standard testing rig. It consists of an Intel Core i7 3960X (Sandy Bridge-E) processor, an ASUS P7X79 Pro motherboard, 16 GB Corsair DDR3-1600 RAM, a Samsung Spinpoint F1 hard drive and a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200 watt power supply. For Quad-SLI we switched to an ASUS Rampage IV Formula motherboard and an Enermax Platimax 1500W PSU. All benchmarks were done in Windows 7 x64. This can improve performance and help you export and encoding video faster, have better FPS in games and make things overall smoother. So, how do you setup SLI in your PC? Well, it's pretty simple. Step one is to make sure you have everything you need. First, you'll need an SLI capable motherboard. One easy way to tell if your motherboard is SLI capable is that if it is, it will come with the second thing you need - an SLI Bridge. This will come in your motherboard box and should be labeled appropriately. Next, you'll need two of the exact same graphics cards in regards to clock speed, VRAM, and architecture type, and of course, you'll need to make sure your power supply is strong enough to handle running your system with two GPUs. Once you've got all of that together, SLI your Nvidia graphics cards is pretty easy. Just install the GPUs as you normally would make sure that you push down the tab that locks it in place before putting in both of your cards. Put the thumb screws in place at the back of the GPU where the IO ports are located and hook up the power to both cards using the 6-pin and 8-pin power connectors supplied with your power supply. After the Nvidia GPUs are installed, you need to install the SLI bridge. Doing this is easy. Just take it and put in on the exposed connectors on the left side of the GPU. These are right above the IO ports. You will connect one side of the SLI bridge to one GPU and the other side of the SLI bridge to the other GPU. Now, all of the hardware work is down. Put your side panels back on and let's jump into the software. When you first boot up your PC, you'll need to install the Nvidia drivers. You can find these drivers at the link in the description above. Once you have downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers, you'll need to make sure SLI is working. To do this, just right click on your desktop and click 'Nvidia Control Panel'. This will open up the Nvidia GPU control panel. Then, on the side, you will click 'Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX'. Once you're in this panel, just click 'Maximize 3D performance', and you are done! You now have a computer with two Nvidia GPUs running in SLI! We got our hands on FOUR NVIDIA GTX Titan Black GPUs. We didn't have a ton of time with them, but it was enough to run some benchmarks in quad SLI mode, not to mention also giving them a slight overclock to see how the numbers turn out at a 4K resolution.
