When mixing vocals, Marc does not go after super, super compressed vocals, but he does appreciate a vocal that sits really forward in the mix. Getting that forward mix without hyper-compression, though, is kind of tricky. Marc had found that by doing serial compression - multiple in one chain - it does the trick without leaving the vocal sounding hyper compresssed! In betwen these compressor, Marc will do some EQ, some de-essing, and other edits to really bring the vocal forward in the mix and get it sounding exactly the way he wants. My easy to follow acronym for getting CRISPY vocals is C.R.I.S.P.! C - Cut: Cut sibillances with a De-esser and cut unnecessary frequencies with Subtractive EQ R - Reduce: Gain reduction (as in Compression) I - Iron Out: “Iron out” the vocal with Multiband Compression and Dynamic EQ S - Sauce: “Sauce” it with Saturation, Distortion, and Additive EQ P - Paint: “Paint” it with Effects YES, mixing is an art. But every artist knows you have to start with a foundation before you can start breaking the rules and putting the steps out of order. This is your new step-by-step approach for addressing vocals instead of going around in circles and not knowing where to start.
